THE BASICS OF SELLING MICRO STOCK IMAGES

• You create an original image be it an illustration, photograph, flash animation or even video footage.
• You upload that image to a Stock Image Library (see list to the right)
• You make a royalty on each sale of that image.
• Royalties are paid into your PayPal account each month or when a payout level is reached.

That in very basic terms is how selling through a stock image library works. A typical royalty is 50%-80% which can bring in an average return of 5$ per image. This is an average depending on the usage license that the client purchases. For example, a use once, low resolution image for a web blog will only cost the client around $1, where as a high resolution image with an extended license package added (where your image may be used many times on a product such as a greetings card) can cost them $50 or above. Fees are calculated in dollars as most the sellers are based in the United States, some however now offer royalties in euros.

With only a library of 100 images you can easily bring in a return of £100’s each month and when you consider that many sellers with a library averaging 500 images are now using stock images as their main source of income, it’s potential is obvious.

To the right is a list of the best known royalty free stock image libraries in order of importance. The order of this list will be updated every month with the changing trends in the market. Creating accounts with all of these is completely free and very simple. Some require that you upload sample images before being approved, but this is usually to filter out those who what to upload pictures of their pets, or holiday snaps. This is a professional market and should be considered as such.

Images that sell well are:
• People (these will require a model release) • Flowers • Background Designs • Business Concepts • Nature Images • Abstract Backgrounds • Vector Format Illustrations • Design Elements • Vintage or Grunge Style Illustrations • Seasonal Images • Christmas Images • Valentines • Retro Concepts • Food Images

All that’s needed to create a successful image library is a creative spark and motivation to keep working at it. Start with signing up to the top 6 on the list and see where it takes you...
